News for Newbies -- Fishing Club Facebook

New members, by now you've hopefully discovered 1. this blog and 2.  our website, http://lovelandfishingclub.org.  Our news usually comes on this blog or an e-mail and the website holds information that doesn't change to often (including a description of the club activities).
You'll see that you can't respond to articles posted on the blog or website; we had it set up that way originally, but got too much spam.  But there is also a Facebook page, where you can post information or ask questions.  It's a "Secret" page, meaning the only way you can access it is by being a member.  And you can only be a member if I or Jim Roode adds you to the roster.
I strongly suggest you sign up; just send a note to Jim at jimroode@yahoo.comAnother good thing to know:  you can sign up so that anything posted to this blog is sent to you by e-mail.  Look to the top right of this blog and find where it says Follow by Email.  and just enter your e-mail in the box.
You can also access the Club Calendar from the blog by clicking another link at the top right of the page, https://sites.google.com/site/lovelandfishingclub/Resources/calendar

Other questions?  Drop me a note .  Or better yet, post it on the Facebook page.  Bill

Remember when Lou stepped out of Tom's boat and into the drink?

Okay, maybe he was not alone in keeping us amused.  Leland came across the following on YouTube:
YouTube fishing

Hands in their pockets, not on their poles ...

An indication the fish weren't biting at Carter last week.  Still, how often can you fish in open water in February around here without freezing our butts off?  It's rumored that Leland, seated at left, did pretty well.

The first time I went fishing with Dave Harem, it was 23 degrees below zero when he and I and a dozen other club members dragged our sleds onto Lake Grandby for my very first experience fishing through the ice.

The wind was howling as it’s supposed to in January in Grand County, and the fish were nowhere to be found, which sometimes happens in January in Grand County.  Dave was sitting on his overturned bucket facing me, and made an observation that I treasure:  “You know, Bill, I think we do things like this just to show ourselves we still can.”

Dave taught me how dead stick in one hole while ice fishing, while jigging with the other; and he and Jim Roode taught me and others how to tie a fly, in a Chilson Center class.  Dang, he was a neat old dude, quiet in a group but a real talker one-on-one. And he was as tough as they come,

I remember the first time I saw him out fishing - out float tubing by himself – flipping his way through the weekend jet ski traffic on Boyd Lake.  And who can forget his legendary archery elk hunt a few years ago – when he could barely walk prior to his knee replacement surgery?  He somehow managed to get away from that enraged mother bear when he got between her and her cub, and come back home to tell us about it.  Like many in our club, including the second club member we lost last week, World War II veteran and teacher Bob Kuhn, he was one of a kind.  As Tom Miller says, “We’ve really got to enjoy our time together.  You never know when things will change.”

Above are the club’s charter members who attended  the 2015 annual dinner:  left, Dave Harem, Norm Englebrecht, Lou Colton, Walt Graul, Dottie Bechtel, Jim Clune, George Kral, Bob Roelofsz, Skip Kral, Tom Miller and Bob Ray.

Club member Bob Kuhn dies at age 91

Robert "Bob" Kuhn, long-time club member and a veteran of World War II, died Saturday at age 91.
Memorial services are planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at Vessey Funeral Service, 2649 East Mulberry, Fort Collins.

Bob was born on February 17th, 1926 on the family farm to Eugene and Harriet Kuhn of Wangum Falls, Pa. He was the youngest of three children. He had a brother Denton Kuhn and a sister Jane Smith, both from Hawley, Pa.

After graduating high school he was enlisted in the Army Infantry division. Stationed in Germany after the war he met Yolanda, his first wife and mother of his son. They married in August of 1947 and remained married for 57 years until the death of his wife Yolanda, in 2004. He resided outside of Philadelphia with his wife for many years. He attended night school to obtain his teaching degree where he became an industrial arts teacher. He taught industrial arts for 22 years until retirement upon which they moved to Washington State.

In 2004, he and his wife moved to Loveland. After the passing of his wife Yolanda he met Alice Saldeen and was wed in 2005. After divorcing Alice he lived by himself until 2016 when he was placed into assisted living. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, outdoor activities and playing cards. He was a Boy Scout master for several years in Pa. and belonged to the Loveland Fishing Club.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law who reside in Fleming, Co. and three grandchildren and one great grandson, all of Colorado. Please leave the family a condolence at http://www.VesseyFuneralService.com

Fishing survey updates on area lakes

In our continuing drive to motivate anglers to look ahead to spring, it is good to note that the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife has just updated its fisheries surveys of lakes across the state, with several northern Front Range lakes updated in 2017.  This includes discussion of fishing prospects, 2016 stocking and results of gill net surveys conducted last summer and fall.  (For some reason there’s been no update of Horsetooth since 2013).  I’m including links below to survey information updates in 2017.

Among other things, the report indicates “walleye fishing at Boyd Lake should be excellent in 2017,” with gill net survey showing walley abundance in the lake at its second highest level since the late 1970s.  (2010 was better).  And Rivers Edge should continue to improve.

2017 Nebraska fishing forecast

Okay, ice is melting and the winds are howling, always a good time to read about fishing.  Nebraska Outdoors, ever on top of things, has just published its 2017 fishing forecast.  Among other things, they predict some of the best walleye fishing in the state will come from the Panhandle - particularly Minatare, Winter Creek and Box Butte.  Best white bass prospects:  Swanson, Harlan and McConaughy.  I'm organizing my gear this evening.  Here's a link to the report:

Mine's bigger!  Mine's prettier!  Dave Boyle, left, compares his rainbow with Norm Englebrecht's during this week's club trip to North Park lakes.
