Girl Scouts need our help with fishing, Monday, July 11

Note:  this posting is also being sent to members by e-mail. The Loveland Girl Scouts are holding their summer Day Camp Monday, July 11th and are looking for the Loveland Fishing Club to once again help them with fishing.

This is an annual outing for the club; lot of fun. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the boat ramp at Lon Hagler.

Club President Karol Strohscheim will have a signup sheet at breakfast Friday at Perkins. You can also e-mail the club at fishingclubloveland@gmail.com  The club will supply fishing tackle and bait; just show up and give the kids a hand.

North Michigan Reservoir reopens for fishing, other recreation

State Forest State Park announces North Michigan Reservoir is full, stocked with fish, and open for recreation. In addition to the reservoir, campsites in the North Michigan campground closed during construction will be open and available for reservations this summer. The high country lake west of Fort Collins is a popular destination for Loveland Fishing Club members.

"We are excited the dam has been revitalized for the future and the reservoir refilled," said State Forest State Park Manager Joe Brand. "We are thankful for all those who contributed to the swift maintenance of the dam to ensure public safety, and looking forward to recreation users being able to enjoy North Michigan Reservoir once again."

The 60-foot-high dam at North Michigan Reservoir was originally built in 1963. The reservoir stores approximately 1,300 acre-feet of water. Worsening seepage conditions on the north abutment were identified in 2015. The discovery resulted in the prioritization of maintenance efforts at the dam to address developing safety concerns. Rehabilitation work on the dam at North Michigan Reservoir began in March of 2021, closing the lake to boating and several nearby campsites for the summer season.

Norm scores a bruiser Boyd walleye

He still hasn’t revealed what kind of worm he used, but Norm Engelbrecht, backed by John Grady, hauled in this chunk last week.

Hey! Water's pouring into Boyd Lake

Not sure when it began, but with Lake Loveland and Horseshoe reservoirs filled, the water has started flowing into Boyd, which had been getting ominously low. Any word on smaller lakes around here getting water? Berthoud's new town reservoir comes to mind; down 5 or 6 feet it can't really spare.

Meanwhile, we've heard a rumor that Norm caught a humongous walleye there on Thursday, but haven't seen the beast. I wouldn’t say the lad is prone to exaggeration, but you might ask Gail. If this were Tom, he’d have already eaten the evidence.

Faces from the Kids Derby

Generations of anglers!

Jason, now 39, grew up in Loveland within walking distance of the Duck Pond. He fished in his first derby at about age 11, and now brings his own offspring for the event.

Great-grandpa Damian and great-grandma Letty took their son Adam to the Kids Derby. Now they bring Adam's grandkids...

Now this lad enjoys his fish!

This successful angler, not so much. As
she put it:  "I REALLY don't like fish."

All Winners at 2022 Loveland Kids Derby

This year's Kids Derby was about as successful Saturday as it could get:  great weather, cute kids, families enjoying a perfect day at North Lake Park Duck Pond. Under the leadership of the club's Derby Chair Rick Golz, the Loveland Fishing Club handled logistics, provided bait and tackle and awarded prizes. In addition to hourly prizes awarded through a free-to-all raffle, the club awarded grand prizes for largest and smallest trout of the day. This year's winners:  Hyatt Vinzent with the largest, a stout 12 3/4" fish, and Brooke Davis with the smallest, 61/2"
