The Colorado Division of Wildlife will be stocking Boyd Lake with 5,000 catchable rainbow trout this week, according to area biologist Ben Swigle.    Speaking at the Larimer County Fishing Expo on Sunday, Ben also said Lon Hagler would also receive fish this week.   The earliest stocking in 2012 was made in early April. Ben also said the DOW has stocked a number of 8” tiger muskie in Joe Wright Reservoir, in an effort to reduce the grayling population to help with the stunting problem there.   Curt Davies, DOW biologist for northeast Colorado, also said there were no indications of fish lost in the Cache la Poudre after last summer's High Park Fire, but there may have been losses in smaller tributaries.  He confirmed that the DOW had temporarily boosted trout fishing success in Horsetooth last fall, when 73,000 trout at the Bellevue Watson Fish Hatchery were threatened by runoff from the fire.  There are no plans to repeat the event, so it's ...

Each summer and fall , Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife – Ben Swigle and associates – conduct gill net and electroshock surveys of Colorado lakes, seeking hints on the quality of the coming season.   Water levels and prospects of irrigation drawdowns will trump just about everything else this year, and not all lakes are surveyed each year, but this year’s surveys show promising walleye population in Boyd, continued improvement in Lon Hagler as a trophy bass lake, and a healthy saugeye and walleye population at Lonetree, albeit at the expense of a once-good wiper fishery.   We also know there were substantial hits to smaller tributaries of Front Range trout streams, but nothing definitive. A number of club members have had good luck fishing with a guide on the big South Dakota impoundments on the Missouri River, and planning a return trip this summer or fall. Gerry Miles was elected to a one-year term as Loveland Fishing Club President at the club's annual banquet at Chilson Senior Center Friday, Jan. 18, by unanimous proclamation of members. Bill Prater was named vice president.  He continues as the club Webmaster. Karol Stroschein was elected club secretary, becoming the first woman to hold office. Charlie Higgs continues in a second term as club treasurer. Our thanks to outgoing president Dave Boyle and secretaryGene Speidel. The Lonetree Reservoir boat dock, installed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife three years ago with the help of Loveland Fishing Club volunteers and funding, is being improved by club members under leadership of Tom Miller and Dennis Kelsey.  First, improve methods for moving the dock up and down the water column, in response to changing water levels.  On Oct. 15, volunteers installed a half-ton concrete block at the base of the Lonetree boat ramp that will anchor about 300 feet of cable for hoisting the dock up and down.  Second, later this year Tom and Dennis plan to repair and improve the dock mechanisms that move and anchor the dock in place.   Tom, left, and Dennis preparing to install the steel cable.
