Loveland Kids Fishing Derby to be held Saturday, May 18th

Editor's note: If you've not signed up yet to volunteer, please contact Bob McHale, DerbyChair or 970-690-0227. Feel free to forward this anyone who may be interested in this popular free event.

A Loveland tradition for decades, the Loveland Kids Derby will be held on Saturday, May 18th at North Lake Park Duck Pond. It’s a bit earlier than years past, away from summer heat, a move intended to keep the trout stocked in Duck Pond healthy and hungry. (The pond will be open to fishing for all after the event).

The derby, free and open to all youngsters up to age 14, begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. The pond will be full of catchable-size trout stocked by Colorado Parks and Wildlife

Lovelanders and youngsters from surrounding communities have been participating in the derby for generations.

Here are the highlights:

  • To qualify for prizes, register in the morning before starting to fish, at Loveland Fishing Club stations set up in the Loveland High School parking lot just east of the pond, and at the covered shelter on the west.
  • Club Derby Chair Bob McHale says the fishing club will also loan out fishing worms and tackle for kids who need it, measure the fish and handle free raffles. There will be prizes awarded in raffle drawings throughout the competition, and prizes for biggest and smallest trout caught.
  • There’s a limit of two trout for participants, ensuring there’ll be plenty for all. When you catch one, take it to the Colorado Youth Outdoors booth on the east side of the pond, where they’ll show you how to clean that fish – and give it back to you to eat.
  • As they've done for years, volunteers with Loveland Kiwanis Clubs will provide food and drinks at “family-friendly” prices.
  • Again, no cost, and no need to register prior to the day of the event.
